SINCLAIRVILLE — Jim White is a volunteer delivery driver for the Sinclairville 76ers Meals on Wheels program; one of the many volunteers who deliver meals on three different routes in the Cassadaga Valley area.

The Meals on Wheels program began with the formation of the 76ers group in 1976 to assist seniors in their housing and their meals.

White has been growing a beard since 2010 because he portrays a Revolutionary Soldier in local parades and often fires his old rifle as part of the demonstration. White is a member of the Sons of the American Revolution.

After many years of growing his beard, White said that he would shave it off for a cause. He encouraged people to make a donation towards the 76ers Meals on Wheels program for the removal of the beard. At the site in the Sinclairville Fire Hall, White agreed that the time was near, and with the help of a local beautician Patti France, who also works as the 76ers social worker, the beard was shaved. France held a pair of plastic display scissors to mark the beginning of the occasion. A real pair of scissors were actually used in the beard removal. Many people watched the removal, and with cheers from the crowd, the beard was removed, and White was cleanly shaven.

The Sinclairville 76ers Meals on Wheels program has three different delivery routes — to Villenova, Cherry Creek, Conewango Valley, Ellington, Cassadaga, Stockton, Bear Lake, Centralia, Sinclairville and Gerry. The longest route is 60 miles and the shortest route is 20 miles. The 76ers own their delivery vans, which were purchased through various fundraising events and donations.

Meals are prepared in the Sinclairville Fire Hall dining room and delivered on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. For those who can attend, the same meal is served as the luncheon site on those days at noon. Richard Smith of Sinclairville is the president, John Sipos of Cassadaga is the vice president, Bonnie Larkin is the secretary and Marge McIntyre is the treasurer. Elsie Livermore is the site manager.
