Fredonia Students Attend Scholars Conference

Dr. Amanda Lohiser, Tom Monahan, Anna Booth, Shuanna Rospierski, Lauren Gutman, Dr. Angela McGowan and Hannah Grable.

Five senior communication students from the State University at Fredonia, accompanied by Angela McGowan and Amanda Lohiser, assistant professors in the university’s Communication Department, presented research papers at the eighth annual James C. McCroskey and Virginia P. Richmond Undergraduate Scholars Conference, held in conjunction with the Eastern Communication Association Conference, recently in Pittsburgh, Pa.

Each year, the Undergraduate Scholars Conference features the best research from undergraduate communication students. The students presented research they completed in Dr. McGowan’s Rhetoric and Criticism course.

Thomas Monahan (Communication Studies, from Middletown) won “Top Poster” honors for his research, “Rhetoric of Guernica,” during an undergraduate poster session.

Lauren Gutman (Public Relations, from Jamestown); Shaunna Rospierski (Public Relations, from Alden) and Anna Booth (Communication and History, from Fredonia), who partnered with two students from the State University at Brockport, had their panel, “Contemporary Rhetors’ Use of Media and Symbols to Persuade, Construct Americans’ Social Realities, and Encourage Civic Engagement,” recognized as the “Top Undergraduate Panel.”

Each panelist explored the rhetorical strategies that social figures use to influence the American people to become agents of change.

Hannah Grable (Communication Studies, from Frewsburg) presented her first conference paper, “Conjuring Cognizance in Public Memory: Burke’s Pentad and Puritan Panic,” to an audience of more than 30 faculty members and students.

The Eastern Communication Association, formed in 1910, is a regional professional organization of scholars, teachers and students of Communication Studies. “Building Bridges” was the theme of this year’s conference.
