Progressive Committee Endorses Golden

ELMIRA — The Tompkins County Progressive Committee, a group of more than 100 activists, has endorsed Ian Golden for Congress in New York’s 23rd District.

The endorsement comes on the heels of public endorsements from their sister organizations: Progressive Action Network of the Southern Finger Lakes, which includes Chemung, Schuyler and Steuben counties, as well as Tioga County Progressive Committee. The three organizations will now send the endorsement to the state level for consideration of a national endorsement from Our Revolution, a national progressive organization that evolved out of the Bernie Sanders movement.

“I’m honored to be endorsed by the Progressive Action Network chapters across our district. In such a deep field of primary candidates, I think this speaks to the level of engagement and grass-roots support we’ve built over the last few months,” Golden said.

Golden finished first in a straw poll late in 2017 held by the Allegany, Cattaraugus and Chautauqua Democratic committees at the end of 2017.

Democratic candidate Tracy Mitrano won a straw poll conducted in recently after the seven candidates running for the Democratic Party’s endorsement participated in a candidate forum. Participants were asked to identify their top three candidates and Mitrano won the most votes by a 100-point margin. Four hundred people attended the event.

Mitrano focused her remarks during the forum on the need to vote for a candidate who not only can win against incumbent Tom Reed but who also has a clear plan to bring opportunity back to the district.

“We have a Washington insider who votes to advance the lives of his supporters and not his constituents,” Mitrano said. “(Tom Reed) does not intimidate me and I will not let him intimidate us. We will expose his deceptive tactics. We will speak integrity to his disrespect, honesty to his lies, and courage to his fears. And we will unseat him on Nov. 6.”
