Area Piano Students Honored By Guild

Matthew Lefler, Jasmine Buffone, Jon Zdunski and Sophia Simons, students of area piano teacher Andrew Schmidt, each recently received the Five-Year National Award from the National Guild of Piano Teachers.

The award signifies that in each of the past five years, the four students have each performed a demanding 10-piece memorized program of piano compositions for a guild-appointed judge and received a passing grade on repertoire, scales, arpeggios and cadences. Their pictures will appear in the Winter 2018 issue of the magazine Piano Guild Notes in recognition of this achievement.

Lefler is the son of Dennis and Leah Lefler. A sixth-grader at Southwestern Middle School, his other activities include baseball, soccer and reading.

Buffone is the daughter of Michael and Roxanne Buffone. A sophomore at Jamestown High School, her other activities include kickboxing, soccer and school musicals.

Zdunski is the son of Curtis and Sharon Zdunski. A junior at Falconer High School, his other activities include bowling, band, and tech crew for school musicals.

Simons is the daughter of Mitchell and Laura Simons. A freshman at Jamestown High School, her other activities include swimming and babysitting.

The National Guild of Piano Teachers was founded in 1929 and now holds auditions for more than 100,000 students annually at guild centers throughout the United States, China and several other countries. At each center, students perform for s guild-appointed judge who evaluates their performance. Schmidt’s students perform annually at the Guild center located at State University at Fredonia School of Music.
