BEMUS POINT — On Flag Day this year, Cassadaga Village Historian John Sipos presented the history and some facts about our American flag to the Bemus Point Historical Society. This year marks the 240th year of the birthday of our American Flag as adopted by Congress in that year.

Sipos began his talk with the time when General George Washington, with Robert Morris and George Ross met with Betsy Ross, a seamstress and flag maker to design the American Flag. It was to be rectangular in shape as it would fly easier. The 13 stars in a circle were meant for each state, and with the circle, all were equal. Congress adopted the flag on June 14, 1777.

Sipos showed some other American Flags including the 15-star and 15-stripe flag used from 1794 through the war of 1812. This flag inspired Francis Scott Key to write the Star Spangled Banner at Fort McHenry.

Prior to the presentation, Scott Bloss was recognized as the recipient of the Bemus Point Historical Society’s “Mary Jane Stahley Historian Award.” The Maple Grove senior will be attending Clarkson University where he will study engineering. He was joined by his mother, Cindy, and grandfather, Ron Karachi. The award was presented by the society’s co-president, Bob Terreberry with the assistance of Jon Stahley, Mary Jane Stahley’s son. The award is given annually to a Maple Grove senior who exemplifies Mrs. Stahley’s interest in history and life-long dedication to the community.

The Bemus Point Historical Society is located on Alburtus Avenue in Bemus Point, and holds meetings with speakers on the second Wednesday of each month. The museum will be open on Saturdays during July and August from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. All are welcome.
