Health Care Career Advantage Internships Available

The Sheldon Foundation and Chautauqua Region Community Foundation have awarded Chautauqua Works Workforce Investment Board a grant to support building a healthcare talent pipeline for the local region. In addition to working with local school districts to create awareness of health care careers at the high school level through a career fair at UPMC Chautauqua WCA on May 4, this program will also offer an internship component for college students.

“This is our sixth year being able to offer internships specifically in direct care in the healthcare field to increase awareness of and interest in our local job opportunities,” said Katie Geise, executive director. “Internship programs are a great opportunity for college students to gain experience, but this specific program is also a great opportunity to start building connections with our future workforce. We have a need to fill healthcare jobs locally, and we need to start building relationships between students and employers now.”

Nate Larson was a 2016 participant in the Healthcare Career Advantage Internship. He graduated from Colgate University with a Bachelor of Arts in Molecular Biology and was taking a gap year before attending medical school and was placed at UPMC Chautauqua WCA Hospital.

“I have been working as an emergency care assistant in the Emergency Department of WCA Hospital, where my responsibilities range from transporting patients and cleaning rooms to running EKGs and recording vitals,” Larson said. “The job has been an amazing opportunity, and the experiences and exposure to the field that it has provided will undoubtedly be helpful not only for my applications to medical school, but also for helping me understand the kind of physician I eventually hope to become.”

Currently, the internship program is seeking college level applicants that are interested in gaining more experience in the healthcare field while also being interested in having a career locally. The program will place interns at host organizations for approximately six weeks. The timing is flexible based on student’s availability and the employer’s need.
