The Other Side Of Medicare Open Enrollment

2017 is here and Medicare Open Enrollment is in the rear view mirror … or is it? Many individuals are still in the process of finalizing their Medicare insurance plans and our OFA Health Insurance Counselors (HIICAP) are still at work offering information and enrollment for those individuals who still need to finalize their plans.

For individuals who have completed the Open Enrollment process, we thank you for your patience in waiting for an appointment to be scheduled. We also thank you for your kindness to our HIICAP counselors and schedulers. This year’s Open Enrollment was busier than any year the OFA has ever seen. The sheer number of clients who needed assistance in reviewing plans and making choices for enrollment increased significantly. This year, countless clients lost their insurance coverage and were in need of assistance in enrolling into another insurance plan that would fit their health care needs.   This, along with the usual annual review for individuals who wanted to learn what options they had for 2017 made the need for one-on-one HIICAP appointments this year at an all-time high. The staff at the Office for the Aging is very happy for the opportunity to assist our seniors who need help in navigating the confusing road called Medicare. It can be a very rough road to travel before reaching the end to enrollment!

As the Health Insurance Coordinator (HIICAP) for the Office for the Aging, I would like to acknowledge and thank the OFA HIICAP counselors who worked overtime, weekends and evenings to assist clients with counseling, the NY Connects staff who answered numerous calls and all OFA staff who scheduled and assisted clients throughout the Open Enrollment period.

Medicare Open Enrollment is always a team effort and our OFA Team wishes you a Happy New Year!  We hope to see you during the 2017 Open Enrollment in October!
