County Vegetarian-Vegan Society To Meet
The Chautauqua County Vegetarian-Vegan Society will meet on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the YWCA, 58 S. Portage St., in Westfield. The speaker will be Gail Erb, co-Coordinator of the group. Gail will speak on “Pilot Project: Vegan Options at Local Restaurants.”
This effort to introduce vegan food to local restaurants was initiated by Anne Dinshah, vice-president of the American Vegan Society. Anne talked with Fredonia restaurants about serving vegan food. Several of them were interested, and three joined in offering a vegan progressive dinner held in October 2016. Gail will talk about efforts to educate restaurants about serving food that is healthy, tasty and free of animal products. Now two Fredonia restaurants are planning four-course vegan dinners on Feb. 9 and Feb. 28 to showcase new items coming to the menus.
The menu for the evening will be pot luck. Those attending are invited (but not required) to bring a nutritious dish to share which will serve eight to ten people. All food should be vegan (no meat, eggs or dairy products), and, if possible, organic and locally grown. Those attending should also bring their own table service.
The cost of the dinner is $6 per person, or $2 per person if you bring a dish to share, with reduced rates for children. For more information or to make a reservation, please call Gail Erb at 753-7761 or Anne Watkins at 782-4334, or email annewatkins@juno.com. The meeting will be weather-dependent, so those calling for a reservation should leave their phone number in case the meeting has to be canceled.
All meetings are open to the public, especially to those who are interested in learning more about healthy eating and living. It is not necessary to be vegan or vegetarian to attend the meeting. The Vegetarian Society is an information and support group for individuals seeking to explore healthy eating through vegetarian or vegan lifestyles. The group meets monthly for a vegan dinner.
