Say It Ain’t Snow: Lake Effect Warning For Southern Tier

Most of the Southern Tier is under a lake effect snow warning.

While Jamestown has had a fairly mild season so far, winter weather is supposed to strike very soon.

According to The National Weather Service, a lake effect snow warning has been issued, which includes the area from the New York State Thruway in Hamburg to the New York/Pennsylvania state line. Chautauqua and Southern Erie counties are included in the warning, which is in effect from 6 a.m. Thursday to 6 a.m. Saturday.

The National Weather Service is predicting accumulations of three to six inches Thursday; six to 11 inches Thursday night;  four to eight inches Friday; and three to five inches on Friday night, which will bring a total of more than two feet in the most persistent lake snows.

The extended weather forecast for the Jamestown area includes a snow accumulation of around 2-4 inches Thursday and 7-10 inches Thursday night. Precipitation is not estimated for Friday in the Jamestown forecast.

The warning advises that heavy lake effect snow and areas of blowing snow will lead to significant accumulations of snow on area road ways and very poor visibility at times which will result in hazardous to nearly impossible travel conditions at times within the most intense portions of the band. Be prepared for severe winter weather driving conditions with near zero visibility and deep snow cover on roads.

On Thursday, the chance of precipitation is 100 percent, and thunder is possible.
