Salamanca Schools Awarded Stepping Stones Grant

Salamanca City School District has a student population of 1,257 Pre-K through 12 students, of whom 37 percent are Native. Of significance, less than 7 percent of the faculty and staff is Native American.

The goal of this project is to educate all members of the Salamanca City CSD school community on Seneca Longhouse ceremonies, the Ceremonial Cycle, traditional ways of teaching Seneca children, and important things to know and remember about Seneca Culture.

A recently developed teacher guide on Longhouse ceremonies will be published and embedded in Salamanca District curriculum. Implementation of the Longhouse ceremonies project will be supported by staff development taught by the author, a member of the Seneca Nation of Indians.

Dupree School District No. 64-2, Dupree, South Dakota was also awarded $5,000.

Incorporated in 1983, the National Indian Impacted Schools Association (NIISA) is an IRS 501c(4) non profit organization. NIISA advocates on behalf of nearly 635 federally impacted public school districts located across the nation.
