Jamestown residents looking for a “Taste of India” now have a shorter distance to travel.

The authentic Indian restaurant bearing that oft-used phrase as its name has relocated from Lakewood to its new home at 718 W. Third St. in Jamestown, which previously housed the Hometown Grille and Aldo’s before that.

The move itself occurred within the past few months, but now with a refurbished interior and exterior — along with a new street sign — the restaurant and its owner, Kala Chima, made the process official with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday. Members of city government were in attendance, along with members of the Jamestown Renaissance Corporation, which assisted Chima and his family with the relocation to Jamestown.

Lisa Hatch, recently appointed executive director of the Jamestown Renaissance Corporation, mapped out Chima’s journey as a restaurateur from New York City to Buffalo to Erie, Pa., before coming to the Jamestown area, and praised his efforts as a business owner.

“He’s a wonderful man, and he’s going to be successful here because he’s been successful everywhere else,” Hatch said. “He was located in Elmwood by Buffalo State before it became one of the nicer communities, and he made it work there. Likewise, his Erie restaurant was always packed — mostly with people from Jamestown. So he responded to their needs and moved his crew here into town. He’s just the kind of person we need in the area.”

Hatch said the Jamestown Renaissance Corporation worked closely with Chima to help provide him with support, particularly through the efforts of Kristy Kathman, JRC’s program and administrative coordinator.

“We’re excited about this restaurant being here, and we think it’s a great move bringing them downtown,” Kathman said. “It’s nice to vary our palette here in Jamestown, as well, by bringing in the only authentic Indian restaurant in Chautauqua County.”

In addition to Indian cuisine, Taste of India also offers Pakistani and Moroccan dishes. The restaurant offers a Indian lunch buffet daily from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., followed by daily dinner service from 4:30-10 p.m.
