LAKEWOOD — “The most exciting thing for me is to see us integrating into the community and be able to take care of the needs of kids in the area,” said Dr. Jan Carlson, dentist at Lakewood Pediatric Dentistry.

Lakewood Pediatric Dentistry has seen great success during the past year, adding staff and seeing more patients, according to Carlson. The practice is unique and has found a home in the lakeside community, she said.

Carlson said she is glad to be beginning a second year in the area. The practiced opened on Aug. 22 last year and has been moving forward ever since.

“We’ve gotten more providers of services,” Carlson said. “We have a full-time dental hygienist on staff now, but I’m still the only doctor. We’ve got one more assistant than we had before. We just find as we have more people in the door, we need to have more help.”

Pediatric dentistry is a special practice only for children, so all the experiences are tailored to the children, Carlson said.

“They can tell when they look around the office, everything is built just for them,” she said. “Not for adults.”

There are televisions on the ceiling so children can watch their favorite movies and shows while they are in the dentist’s chair, stuffed animals are abundant throughout the office and children receive coins for special prizes depending on how many teeth are worked on during their appointment.

“Over the last 12 years, I found that we need special things for the kids, and to be able to give them options really makes them feel comfortable,” Carlson said. “They get to choose their movie, which they loved.”

Her practice is also unique because prior to opening in Lakewood, she was active duty in the Air Force as a pediatric dentist for 11 years. Currently, she is in the Air National Guard in Niagara Falls.

Overall, Carlson invites the public to see what the practice is all about.

“We’re here to serve the kids in the community, so we’re here as a resource,” she said. “We can just help them out just one time, that’s great, but if we can be their dentist for life, that’s great, too. That’s what we’re here for.”

The practice is located at 133 E. Fairmount Ave., Lakewood, and is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The practice is currently accepting new patients. For more information, visit lakewoodpediatricdentistry.com or call 763-0130.
