Dorian’s Salon Celebrating 70 Years
It’s 70 years and counting for Dorian’s Salon in Jamestown.
The salon first opened on Nov. 17, 1947, as Sam Paladino returned to Jamestown after three-and-a-half years with Merrill’s Marauders in China, Burma and India during World War II.
When he returned home from the war at the age of 21, he decided to further his career as a stylist and attend Paul Kay School of Beauty in Buffalo. Prior to attending school, he had his master barber’s license at age 13 and was running his own shop by 14. He enlisted in the military at 18.
After meeting and marrying Doris Bruno, a Rochester native and graduate of Jamestown Business College, they established their first salon location on Spring Street. They then moved and established their second location at 21 E. Second St. in November 1957.
As business expanded, they jumped on an opportunity at a new downtown location at 308 Main St., the former Ren’s Department store building. The salon has remained at the location ever since they made the move in March 1963.
Sam and Doris’ purchase of the building was prompted by their continued faith in the progress of Jamestown and the downtown area. Sam was quoted years ago as saying, ”We still have a good belief in downtown Jamestown. By keeping it looking nice, it can generate a lot of business and a good feeling within the community.”
Today, the family-owned salon continues to thrive under Debbie Gullo and Kandy Lombardo, daughters of the Paladinos. With nine stylists, the salon stays current with the newest trends in hair and nails.
”We’d like to thank the patrons for their continued support,” said Nichole Mason, granddaughter who’s employed at the salon. ”They’re the direct reason for our continued success.”
The salon has employed more than 100 employees over the years while keeping the community looking great. The salon opened its men’s section in the front of the salon in October 1978.
