The world is distracted, according to Buffalo native and Sherman resident Liag Zeppetello.

Instead of appreciating the intelligence and harmony of the natural world, she said, people are so quick to fixate on themselves; indeed, drown in the maelstrom of a consumer and materialistic culture.

People, she said, need a stronger, deeper connection, not only to the world’s nonhuman life, but to its metaphysical background.

Her new shop — Imaginal Realm, Art and Gifts of the Earth Experience – is an ideal place to start.

Located at 141 Chautauqua Ave. in Lakewood, the Imaginal Realm offers an eclectic and unusual blend of abstract art, hand-crafted ceramics, journals, jewelry, wood sculptures and more.

The treasure trove of items, according to Zeppetello, are all for sale and are created mostly by local and regional artists — including herself — that express love and respect for plants, animals and the land.

“My passion and my vision is about the Earth,” Zeppetello said. “One of the things that won’t be in the shop is art that is surrounding what humans think about themselves. What the meaning of the shop is is to speak for and about the Earth and what humans are doing to the Earth, to plants and nonhuman animals.”

Inspired by Stephen Harrod Buhner’s 2014 book entitled, “Plant Intelligence and The Imaginal Realm: Beyond the Doors of Perception into the Dreaming of Earth,” Zeppetello said she wanted a shop that allowed visitors to open their minds and engage with the natural world, while at the same time, feature the work of local artists.

“It is important to support local art and local artists — that’s so much of what Chauauqua is about and has been about for 100 years or more,” she said.

Featured artists include Debra Eck, Nancy Nixon Ensign, Terry Saye, Kathleen Tenpas, Carrie Tredo and Catherine Walsh. Zeppetello said she hopes to expand her artist base as the year goes by.

The Imaginal Realm will have its grand opening on Wednesday from noon to 7 p.m. Reverie Creamery will be pairing cheeses with Bag & String Wine Merchants at the event.
