Library To Host Local Authors

SINCLAIRVILLE — The Sinclairville Free Library announces that local authors Anne and Robert Deming will present a book talk at the library on Monday, Sept. 10 at 6 p.m. The Demings will discuss their book “A History of Bear Lake,” which was published Aug. 14 by Mill City Press Inc. The book has at its core 12 chapters based on recorded oral histories of long-time Bear Lake families, both residential and seasonal, including a chapter entitled “Did You Know That?” which records tales, myths, anecdotes and miscellanea about Bear Lake. Two early chapters describe the early natural/cultural history of the Bear Lake region. Bob and Anne Deming have had a home at Bear Lake for almost 40 years and have been active in the Bear Lake Association. The authors will also meet with the Write Circle writing group at the library on Friday, Sept. 14 at 9 a.m. The Sinclairville Free Library is located at 15 Main St. in Sinclairville.

Smart Driver Class Sept. 17

ELLINGTON — A Smart Driver Safety Class sponsored by the AARP will be held from 1:30-4:45 p.m. Monday, Sept. 17, and Wednesday, Sept. 19, at the Ellington Farman Free Library, 760 Thornton Road, Ellington. Participants must attend both class days and bring their driver’s license and a pen. Taking the class can reduce car insurance premiums by 10 percent and may eliminate up to four penalty points on a driver’s license. The cost is $20 for AARP members and $25 for non-members and must be paid by check or money order. The class is oriented toward drivers over the age of 50 but is open to drivers of all ages. The class certificate is good for three years. To register, call Doug Arters, instructor, at 490-3880. If there is no answer, leave a message.

Wolfe To Speak At Area Museum

WESTFIELD — The public is invited to hear John P. Wolfe of the McClurg Museum, Westfield, talk about Albion Tourgett, noted civil rights leader from Mayville at the Chautauqua Township Historical Society meeting, Thursday, Sept. 20, at 7 p.m. in the Sid Compton Room, old high school, 2 Academy St., Mayville.

Church To Host Indoor Yard Sale

MAYVILLE — An indoor yard sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday in St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Mayville. Those attending should use the side entrance.

Local Thrift Store Holding Sale

The Community Outreach Center Thrift Store is running an “end of summer” sale through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily. Only $2 per bag of summer clothing. All other items over 50 cents will be half off. All summer clothing must go to make room for winter apparel. The center also sells furniture, books and household items. The store is located on the third floor of the First Lutheran Church, corner of Chandler and Center Streets. All proceeds benefit local charities.

Village To Hold Community Walk

SINCLAIRVILLE — The village of Sinclairville and the Sinclairville History Fair are sponsoring a community walk Saturday as part of the requirements for a grant to repair and replace sidewalks in the village. All those interested in walking are asked to meet at the Valley Historical Society Museum at 2:30 p.m. for a walk to Evergreen Cemetery for a tour.
