Record Travelers Expected July 4
According to AAA, a record-breaking 46.9 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more away from home this Independence Day holiday, an increase of more than 5 percent compared with last year and the highest amount since AAA started tracking 18 years ago. For the 39.7 million Americans planning a Fourth of July road trip, INRIX, a global transportation analytics company, predicts travel times in the most congested cities in the country could be twice as long than the normal trip, with Tuesday being the busiest day.
BPU To Close For July 4 Holiday
The offices of the Jamestown Board of Public Utilities and the Yard Waste Site will be closed on Wednesday in observance of the Fourth of July. Wednesday also is a holiday for BPU Solid Waste employees. Therefore, normal Wednesday garbage collection will take place on Thursday. Regular Thursday collection will take place on Friday and Friday collection will move to Saturday.
Kennedy Resident Graduates College
Kirsten Holmberg, a resident of Kennedy, graduated from the University of Rochester on May 20 at the 168th commencement with a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology and English: British and American literature. Holmberg is the child of Steven and Lisa Holmberg, and a graduate of Falconer Central School. The University of Rochester, founded in 1850, is a private research university located in Rochester.
To Meet Today
ELLINGTON — The Ellington Quilters and Crafters will meet today from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Ellington Farman Library. All adults are invited to come to work on their project or to visit. The group meets the first and third Mondays of each month. There are plenty of electrical outlets in the community room for irons, sewing machines, glue guns or any other item that needs electric. The library is located in the former Lock, Stock, and Barrel on the Town Square in Ellington, 760 Thorton Road. The library is handicapped-accessible. For more information, call the library at 287-2945. Library hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. The library is closed Friday and Sunday.
Cherry Festival Set For July 10
The North East, Pa., Fire Department, Crescent and Fuller Hose, will kick off their 73rd annual Cherry Festival on Tuesday, July 10. The festival, located in Heard Park on North Lake Street, will run through Saturday, July 14. The Cherry Festival originated in 1945 as a fundraiser for the volunteer fire department. Today, the tradition continues. Not only has the Cherry Festival become the fire department’s biggest fundraiser but it is also a much-anticipated annual event and community gathering.
Catt. Co. Roads To Close July 9
The Cattaraugus County Department of Public Works will be closing Pigeon Valley Road, between Elm Creek to Allegany roads, in the town of Napoli on Monday, July 9, for two culvert replacements. Construction is expected to last two weeks.
