Bush School Health, Attendance Clerk Retires

Bush Elementary School Health & Attendance Clerk Deb Nevinger with second grader Savannah Nickerson.

Deb Nevinger has spent her whole educational career — 21 years — at Bush Elementary School. For 14 years, she has been a fixture in the Bush School main office as the Health and Attendance Clerk. Mrs. Nevinger is retiring this year and the Bush School family will miss her smiling face everyday.

“Mrs. Nevinger has been exemplar at all times at C.V. Bush Elementary,” said Bush Elementary School Principal Dan Bracey. “Her work ethic and her day-to-day love for her job has made her a great example to all that have worked with her over the last 21 years. She has developed thousands of positive relationships in this community with the students, parents, families, staff and community members. All of us at Bush School will miss her very much in her well-deserved retirement.”

Mrs. Nevinger started at Bush School as a paraprofessional in 1997 and moved her way in the Health and Attendance Clerk position in 2003. JPS Health and Attendance Clerks have many responsibilities in their jobs including placing calls to families when a student is absent from school, following up if a student starts to show signs of chronic absenteeism, entering new student information in databases to keep demographics up-to-date, transferring student records, scheduling new students into classes, assisting the school nurse in health-related duties, providing first aid if the school nurse is not available, and helping to answer school phones. But the most important responsibility is caring about the children.

“I love interacting with the kids. It feels like it was my niche and what I was meant to do,” said Mrs. Nevinger. “I’ve always said that I am here for the kids and to work with the parents to help their children. I love them no matter what. I think I’ve loved being at Bush School because I love the little ones and working with this age group. You really have to be understanding and also try to understand where they are coming from to help them. Retirement is bittersweet. I don’t know whether to celebrate or cry. I’m going to miss my Bush School family.”

Mrs. Nevinger is planning to spend more time with her family, especially her 3-year-old grandson and 2-month-year old granddaughter. She also hopes to travel more with her husband. Bush School and Jamestown Public Schools wishes Mrs. Nevinger a safe and healthy retirement.
