The Loving Way Has Kids Think About Their Future

Jashara Mosley wants to be a mother as part of Love Elementary School’s “Future Wall” created by the Love School PBIS team.

Doctors, veterinarians, firefighters and police officers are just some of the photographs lining the walls at Love Elementary School – but they aren’t adults, they are kids showing off their future careers. The photographs are part of the “Future Walls” project that the Love PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) team created in the school. Every year the Love PBIS team, “The Loving Way,” encourages students to work hard and be kind. Along with emphasizing those character traits, the team also reminds students that they will always be members of the Love School family and that everyone at the school will be interested to find out where they go in the future.

“Dr. Apthorpe showed the Jamestown Public Schools staff a video on opening day of students talking about what they wanted to be when they grew up,” said Love Elementary School teacher Laurie Hind, who spearheaded the project. “Before our PBIS team meeting I saw a project like our ‘Future Wall’ that another school had done to great success. After sharing the basic idea with our team, we developed the idea to have each grade level create a future wall with their photographs.”

With the help of district instructional coaches, Jeff Kresge, Jayme Genco and Doug Foster and JPS Technology Integration Coach Jason Kathman, Mrs. Hind’s students set up a green screen and learned how to drop a picture of a lion, Love School’s mascot, behind it. Her students also learned how to take pictures of each student, use apps and help direct the experience for the rest of the school. Love teachers discussed future plans with their students, talked about goal setting and generated a list of potential careers. The team gathered props and set up a photo shoot for each child. Love students, Anthony Sanchez-Toro and Lilian Rivera Rodriguez, were the lead photographers for the school-wide event.

In addition to the students’ pictures, the team created a green screen at their open house for Love school families to have a family photo taken and displayed their photos in the main hallway.

“My class has plans for several other green screen projects to allow all my students to learn the different parts of the process,” said Mrs. Hind. “We hope the conversations and images around the school continue to inspire students for the future.”

“This project was absolutely awesome! The pictures were hung in the hallways during open house so students could show their families,” said Love Elementary School Principal Renee Hartling. “We are a family with many different hopes and dreams. Goal setting and hard work are the cornerstones to success and this was an opportunity for all students to begin the process. I thank everyone that made it happen!”
