Framed In Pink: Bowling Over Breast Cancer Creates New Fund

Teams participating in the Framed in Pink - Bowling Over Breast Cancer annual October event at Jamestown Bowling Company come in ages.

Bowlers from across the Southern Tier have been supporting the fight against breast cancer for years. Sue Lamb has spearheaded this effort because of personal commitment. She has now taken the effort one step further by endowing their fight with the Framed in Pink: Bowling Over Breast Cancer Fund at WCA Foundation. The perpetual fund will continue to grow with gifts from the community while giving grants to UPMC Chautauqua WCA to help fight breast cancer.

“I think this is a fantastic opportunity to raise awareness of breast cancer here in our community,” Sue Lamb said. “We have been holding these bowling events for years and have donated money to the Susan G. Komen organization and the American Cancer Society.

Rather than send money to California and receive no recognition, Lamb said the foundation decided to keep everything local.

“Four years ago we decided to give locally and started supporting the activities of the hospital’s Cancer Treatment Center,” she said. “We donated $24,000 before we decided to start the fund with this year’s proceeds of $9,000.

“Starting the Framed in Pink: Bowling Over Breast Cancer Fund at the Foundation will not only let us continue our October fundraising bowling tournament and create an endowment, but it will allow anyone to donate to our cause of fighting breast cancer. They can send a donation whenever they want to say thank you, honor or memorialize someone. It’s a perfect opportunity all year long to fight breast cancer and help local patients,” Lamb said.

The event is not made possible without the help and support of Jim Mee and Mary Gayton, owners of the Jamestown Bowling Company, which hosts the annual tournament in October.

“They are super to us,” Lamb added.

Helping with the hard work of putting on a tournament of this size is a committee which includes Sue Lamb, Patti Reed, Julie Abramson, Kristy Moore, Marcia Derby, Megan and Brooke Ludwiczak, Oleta Hannon, Theresa Jackson, Jen Peters, Jenn Erickson, Cindy Johnston, Mary Jo Salvaggio and Michael Maher. Each year Paul Whitford dresses in breast cancer fighting pink for the event and is an all-around helper according to Lamb. Those interested in helping or donating to the event may contact Sue Lamb through the Jamestown Bowling Company.
