LAKEWOOD — A 22-year-old Lakewood poet is now a published author, having recently released a compilation of her written work to the public.

Faith Gibbons is offering the community a glimpse into her past via prose in her debut collection of poems entitled “RAW: From Heart to Head,” which will be featured in a book signing event at Off the Beaten Path book store Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The book was released in April, and is comprised of poetry inspired from real-life hardships and tragedies that were personally endured by Gibbons. She said putting the grief of these experiences down on paper has been healing for her, as well as others.

“This book of poetry is mostly about specific heartache and trauma that I’ve personally experienced over the past four years, such as sexual abuse and two incredibly difficult losses,” Gibbons said. “I decided to put together the compilation with hopes of the poems acting as a kind of healing tool for others who have experienced or are experiencing the same things. The book took a few months of preparation before getting the actual publication process started, and after that maybe about a month or so to be 100 percent finished.”

Regarding the title of the book, Gibbons said it serves as a descriptor for how the poems within were conceived. “I have to feel something deeply before I’m ever able to write about it,” she explained.

She said her expectations as far as the impact “RAW” has had have already been exceeded, as a copy of the book currently resides in a therapy office in Virginia — where patients are encouraged to take the book home with them to read.

Physical copies of the book are currently available at Off the Beaten Path book store, 28 Chautauqua Ave. in Lakewood, and online via Amazon — where electronic Kindle versions of the book can also be purchased.

Gibbons said she is already anticipating future publications. She is currently in discussions with her friend Adriana Roehmholdt regarding a planned release of a collaborative chapbook entitled “After: The Book About Relationships and the After-Effect of Them All” — which will be available for pre-order at her “RAW” book signing Saturday.
