‘Back Room Radio Hour’ To Feature McIlvain, Pulse Poetry Tonight

Trinity Guitars’ “Back Room Radio Hour” will feature a performance by local singer-songwriter Rebecca McIlvain, pictured at right, today at 7 p.m.

For its 31st overall installment, Trinity Guitars’ WRFA-LP 107.9 FM-affiliated program “Back Room Radio Hour” will feature Jamestown-based talent.

The program will feature the artistic abilities of local singer-songwriter Rebecca McIlvain, as well as original poetry by Jamestown’s own Pulse Poetry group, in a live, on-site taping tonight.

McIlvain is an up-and-coming performer and vocalist, and will be making her first appearance on the program. Currently, she can be seen making occasional acoustic performances around the area both solo and alongside Bill Ward, “Back Room Radio Hour” host. Regarding McIlvain, Ward has high praise for her as a musician and as a well-rounded individual.

“Rebecca is a contemplative singer-songwriter, and she is hauntingly beautiful in both her personality and performance,” he said.

Formed in 2014 by local poet and lover of all things Jamestown, Autumn Echo, Pulse Poetry has hosted nearly 100 performances and appears regularly in several venues throughout the city on a monthly basis. Echo and other members of Team Pulse previously appeared on “Back Room Radio Hour” last year, and their witty, gritty insight was inspiring to Ward, who gladly welcomed them back to the show.

“The Pulse Poetry folks are doing great things in this community,” he said. “Autumn has really put together a group of folks who are not only good artists but are also socially conscious and doing something about it. So this pairing with Pulse Poetry and Rebecca, kind of keeps with the tradition of our show; we are a show for independent artists but are also set up to highlight the good that’s going on in our community.”

Tonight’s show will also feature an interview with representatives of Community Helping Hands, a local nonprofit currently in the midst of a national competition that could earn the organization $10,000 in grant funding.

The group was nominated by Jim Holler, Trinity Guitars’ owner and Community Helping Hands board member, for M&T Bank’s “Understanding What’s Important Business Challenge,” an initiative that celebrates local businesses and the organizations they support to make a difference in their communities. It is now a Top 5 competitor, alongside other nonprofits from across the Northeastern U.S., and having made it this far into the competition, is guaranteed $1,000.

The competition is based on a voting system, whereby people can visit bank.mtb.com/BusinessContest and vote for one organization on a daily basis. Voting is now open and runs through noon on Nov. 22. If Community Helping Hands wins the contest, it will be awarded an additional $9,000.

There is no cost to attend a taping session of “Back Room Radio Hour,” but it is preferable that those interested in attending reserve their seats by contacting Trinity Guitars at 665-4490. Reservations may also be made by visiting trinityguitars.com or via the event’s Facebook page.

The show will begin at 7 p.m., and it is recommended that attendees arrive at 6:30 p.m. in order to ensure the program begins on time.
