Local Author To Sign Copies Of New Book Oct. 28

Local author Loren Mayshark will be hosting a book signing at Off the Beaten Path Bookstore on Oct. 28 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. featuring copies of his first work, “Death: An Exploration.”

Mayshark’s debut book claimed the 2016 Beverly Hills Book Award in the category of Death and Dying and was selected as the honorable mention recipient for book of the year in the 2016 Foreword INDIES Awards in the category of Grief/Grieving (adult nonfiction).

The work is an exploratory journey that includes multiple viewpoints on dealing with loss, including Steve Jobs’ embrace of his death, Ray Kurzweil’s striving for immortality and Joseph Campbell’s view of death as the “ornament of life.” The book looks at death from the perspectives of atheists, Christians, Tibetan Buddhists, as well as shamanistic cultures. It is a guidebook, seeking to offer insight and comfort on a topic that many find frightening or macabre. Mayshark will also be signing copies of his most recent release, “Academic Betrayal,” a non-fiction accounting of some of the darker corners of higher education in New York state.

“I am honored to do this first book signing at Off the Beaten Path Bookstore, which is a fantastic independent bookstore. Indie bookstores are a cornerstone of our culture and any opportunity I have to support them is a great opportunity,” said Mayshark.

Mayshark is a Chautauqua County native residing in Bemus Point, who will be spending time in the area after living in Malmo, Sweden for the past six months.

While living in New York City he attended both the Gotham Writers’ Workshop and the respected New York Writers Workshop where he was inspired to take on writing. He is a regular contributor to Can the Man (cantheman.com), an alternative media resource focused on social justice, and the Jovial Journey (thejovialjourney.com), a website dedicated to food, drink, and travel. He has written for The Permaculture Research Institute and Uisio among other outlets.

Mayshark received a B.A. in World History from Manhattanville College in 2004 while minoring in World Religions, and also attended the M.A. History program at Hunter College in Manhattan. His book, “Academic Betrayal” chronicles his experience with academic bullying while at Hunter College. His most recent work is critically acclaimed, receiving a four-star review from Foreword Clarion Reviews which notes, “Mayshark is a good storyteller; his ability to reveal one perplexing situation after another makes for engaging reading, and his observations about specific professors, their mannerisms, and their personal agendas are particularly memorable. There is a whistleblower quality to the story that should raise the hackles of anyone who has been subject to the injustices meted out by a bureaucratic organization. The story could also be seen as a cautionary tale for any prospective graduate student.”

Mayshark is planning to release his third book in January 2018, which will focus on the wine industry in Asia.

“We love supporting all the local authors … Loren’s first book sold very well and his new one is already selling. His books are very informative and well written, and he is as nice as he is talented. We look forward to his book signing as well as his next book,” said Judy Gustafson, co-owner of Off the Beaten Path.
