JCA To Present WNYCO’s ‘Poinsettia Pops’ Concert Wednesday
The Jamestown Concert Association’s annual holiday pops concert will feature a twist on tradition as the Western New York Chamber Orchestra takes the spotlight this winter season.
Traditionally performed by Symphoria, this year’s December concert sponsored by the JCA will feature the WNYCO and the delivery of its “Poinsettia Pops” program Wednesday at the Reg Lenna Center for the Arts, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
“We’re excited to bring in the WNYCO for our holiday concert this year,” said Sally Ulrich, JCA board president. “This is the third concert of our 2016-17 season, and we were able to schedule it more in the middle of the month this time. We hope everyone will come and bring their families, because this is a very family-friendly show with lots of holiday favorites.”
The concert program will feature a broad array of Christmas holiday selections, ranging from excerpts from Tchaikovsky’s 1892 ballet “The Nutcracker” to popular favorites including “The Christmas Song.” Additionally, Christmas carol arrangements created by WNYCO conductor Glen Cortese will be performed by a trio of young vocalists currently studying at the SUNY Fredonia School of Music. The guest vocalists include: Lucia Helgren, soprano; Juliana Grabowski, soprano; and Mariami Bekauri, mezzo soprano.
Comprised of 51 players, the orchestra is the professional Ensemble-in-Residence at SUNY Fredonia. Throughout its 30 years of music making, it regularly presents concerts throughout all of Western New York in Chautauqua, Erie, Niagara and Cattaraugus counties. Traditional classical repertoire as well as pops are regularly presented on WNYCO concert programs, and the orchestra has a rich history of educational outreach.
Tickets to the concert are $25 for adults, $20 for seniors ages 65 and older, and $7.50 for college students. Children 18 and under will be admitted for free if accompanied by a paying adult. For parents of attending students, tickets will be available at a discount of $10. Tickets are available through the Reg Lenna box office, and can be purchased in advance by calling 484-7070 or online at reglenna.com.
A pre-concert reception will be held in the lobby, and will feature refreshments and concessions. Live, pre-concert music will be performed by a chamber group from the Southwestern Central High School Orchestra from the lobby balcony.
Sponsors for the event are Jamestown Community College, Jamestown’s Rental Properties, the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation, the Ralph C. Sheldon Foundation and the United Arts Appeal of Chautauqua County.
