A Gift For The Community
NY Connects is a great way to connect to all kinds of things. As you know, NY Connects is the one place to call for a wide range of services available to those who may need long term community services and community supports. These types of services help people live as independently as possible in their homes. There are different ways to pay for services including Medicaid, Medicare, private insurance, long term care insurance, Veterans and Older Americans Act funds. The OFA home care program helps close to 500 people every day. These services rely on Office for the Aging monies and have limited funding.
At the office for the Aging, an endowment fund was started several years ago in memory and honor of a previous director Mac McCoy. The endowment fund is held at the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation. The endowment was started as a means to grow funds through donations so that the monies could be used to further the services offered from the Chautauqua County Office for the Aging. We are hopeful that the money made from the endowment can be turned into services for people that are waiting for the OFA home care services. Currently, there is a wait list and people in our county need this kind of help. “This endowment fund is to benefit the charitable mission of the Chautauqua County Office for the Aging “ … to provide information and services to seniors and their families to promote independence, optimal health and wellness in a safe and secure environment.” The fund is to be used annually to enhance and expand services to help those seniors most at risk for losing their independence or in need in our community.” (Prinzi, Rose, 2009). When you are home with family at the holidays and need a gift idea, consider a monetary gift to the Mac McCoy endowment fund. You can find them on the Internet at crcfonline.org, call them at 661-3390 or fax 488-0387. They are located at 418 Spring St., Jamestown, NY 14701. When you are looking for a gift for someone that has everything, consider a gift that will celebrate your loved ones compassion for others in a donation to the Mac McCoy endowment fund to help others less fortunate.
You can give a gift to the community by giving of yourself in a volunteer position with our partners like meals on wheels, a volunteer at the Chautauqua Adult Day Services, or a friendly visitor position with the Office for the Aging. We are always looking for volunteers to help all throughout the year. Many different agencies, churches, libraries, local fire departments, and organizations would welcome volunteers and/or donations, you just need to offer! NY Connects can also get people in touch with services and agencies that can provide support for community members.
As you plan to visit family and are looking for gift giving ideas, think about giving a gift to your hometown or a loved one’s community. There are great ideas for gifts of time and assistance that can mean the world to someone. The small extras we take for granted but may be difficult for some to do or afford. These gifts keep on giving all year round. Remember if you are home visiting and see a need-call NY Connects for information about local programs and services. We are able to assess your needs and provide information and assistance with referrals for several programs.
